Chicken and dumplings is a comforting, hearty dish that combines tender chicken, flavorful broth, and fluffy dumplings. Here’s a recipe to make this delicious meal:




For the Chicken Stew:

2 tablespoons olive oil

1 medium onion, chopped

3 cloves garlic, minced


2 large carrots, peeled and sliced

2 celery stalks, sliced

4 cups chicken broth

2 cups cooked chicken breast, shredded or cubed

1 cup frozen peas


1 teaspoon dried thyme

1 teaspoon dried parsley

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon black pepper

1/2 cup heavy cream or half-and-half


For the Dumplings:

2 cups all-purpose flour

1 tablespoon baking powder

1 teaspoon salt

1/4 cup cold butter, cubed

3/4 cup whole milk

Optional Garnish:

Fresh parsley, chopped

Shredded cheddar cheese




Prepare the Chicken Stew:

In a large pot or Dutch oven, heat the olive oil over medium heat.

Add the chopped onion, garlic, carrots, and celery. Cook until the vegetables are softened, about 5-7 minutes.

Pour in the chicken broth and bring to a simmer.

Add the cooked chicken, frozen peas, dried thyme, dried parsley, salt, and pepper. Stir to combine.

Reduce the heat to low and let the stew simmer while you prepare the dumplings.

Make the Dumplings:

In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.

Add the cubed cold butter and use a pastry cutter or your fingers to work it into the flour mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs.

Pour in the milk and stir until just combined. Be careful not to overmix.

Cook the Dumplings:

Drop spoonfuls of the dumpling dough onto the simmering stew, making sure to space them evenly.

Cover the pot and let the dumplings cook for 15-20 minutes, or until they are puffed up and cooked through.

Finish the Stew:

Stir the heavy cream or half-and-half into the stew. Taste and adjust seasoning if necessary.


Ladle the chicken and dumplings into bowls.

Garnish with chopped fresh parsley and shredded cheddar cheese, if desired.



Chicken Options: You can use leftover rotisserie chicken or cook chicken breasts specifically for this recipe.
