  • 1 1/2 cups warm water (110°F/45°C)
  • 2 teaspoons sugar
  • 3 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup cornmeal
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1/4 cup olive oil

For the Tomato Sauce:

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 2 cans (28 ounces each) crushed tomatoes
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • Salt and pepper to taste

For the Toppings:

  • 3 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 pound Italian sausage, cooked and crumbled
  • 1 cup sliced pepperoni (optional)
  • 1 green bell pepper, diced
  • 1 cup sliced mushrooms
  • 1/2 cup sliced black olives

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Dough:
    • In a large mixing bowl, combine the warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until the mixture becomes frothy.
    • Add the flour, cornmeal, salt, melted butter, and olive oil to the yeast mixture. Mix until a dough forms. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for about 5-7 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.
    • Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until it doubles in size.
  2. Prepare the Tomato Sauce:
    • In a large saucepan, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and cook until soft and translucent, about 5 minutes.
    • Add the minced garlic, dried oregano, dried basil, and red pepper flakes (if using). Cook for another 1-2 minutes.
    • Add the crushed tomatoes and sugar. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Bring the sauce to a simmer and let it cook for about 30 minutes, stirring occasionally, until it thickens.
  3. Assemble the Pizza:
    • Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).
    • Grease a 12-inch deep dish pizza pan or a cast-iron skillet with olive oil. Punch down the risen dough and transfer it to the prepared pan. Use your hands to press the dough evenly into the bottom and up the sides of the pan.
    • Sprinkle 2 cups of shredded mozzarella cheese evenly over the dough. Add the cooked and crumbled Italian sausage, followed by the sliced pepperoni (if using), diced green bell pepper, sliced mushrooms, and sliced black olives.
    • Pour the tomato sauce evenly over the toppings. Sprinkle the remaining 1 cup of shredded mozzarella cheese and the grated Parmesan cheese on top.
  4. Bake the Pizza:
    • Bake the pizza in the preheated oven for about 30-35 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the cheese is bubbly and slightly browned.
    • Allow the pizza to cool for about 5-10 minutes before slicing and serving.

Conclusion

Congratulations on making your own Chicago-Style Deep Dish Pizza! This hearty and flavorful pizza is sure to be a hit with family and friends.
