Instructions
-
Activate the yeast:
In a small bowl, combine the warm milk (not hot) with 1 tablespoon of sugar and the yeast.
Let it sit for 5–10 minutes until frothy. -
Make the dough:
In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, remaining sugar, and salt.
Add the yeast mixture and softened butter. Mix until a soft dough forms.
Knead for about 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic. -
First rise:
Cover the dough with a clean towel and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size. -
Shape the doughnuts:
Roll out the dough to about ½ inch thick. Cut into doughnut shapes using a cutter or glass.
Place them on parchment paper and let them rise again for 30 minutes.ADVERTISEMENT
-
Fry the doughnuts:
Heat oil in a deep pot to 170–180°C (340–355°F).
Fry doughnuts in batches, flipping once, until golden brown on both sides (about 1–2 minutes per side). -
Cool and decorate:
Drain on paper towels. While still warm, dust with powdered sugar or glaze them if preferred.
Notes
-
For extra flavor, add a bit of vanilla extract or lemon zest to the dough.
-
Doughnuts are best enjoyed fresh, but can be stored in an airtight container for 1–2 days.
-
You can freeze them (unglazed) for later and reheat lightly in the oven.
