German Chocolate Cake Recipe

 

Ingredients:

For the Cake:

1/2 cup water

4 oz German sweet chocolate

2 cups all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon baking soda

1/4 teaspoon salt

1 cup butter, softened

2 cups sugar

4 egg yolks

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 cup buttermilk

4 egg whites, stiffly beaten

For the Coconut-Pecan Frosting:

1 cup evaporated milk

1 cup sugar

3 egg yolks, beaten

1/2 cup butter

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 1/3 cups flaked coconut

1 cup chopped pecans

Instructions:

Prepare the Chocolate:

Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour three 9-inch round baking pans.

Heat the water and German chocolate together in a small saucepan over low heat until the chocolate is melted. Stir until smooth and set aside to cool.

Mix Dry Ingredients:

In a medium bowl, sift together the flour, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.

Cream Butter and Sugar:

In a large bowl, cream the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add egg yolks one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla and chocolate mixture.

Add Flour and Buttermilk:

Alternately add flour mixture and buttermilk, beating until smooth after each addition.

Fold in Egg Whites:

Gently fold in the stiffly beaten egg whites.

Bake:

Divide the batter evenly among the prepared pans.

Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Allow to cool in pans for 10 minutes, then turn out onto wire racks to cool completely.

    • Combine the evaporated milk, sugar, beaten egg yolks, butter, and vanilla in a saucepan. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until thickened, about 12 minutes.
    • Remove from heat and stir in coconut and pecans. Cool until thick enough to spread.
  2. Assemble the Cake:
    • Spread frosting between layers, on top, and on the sides of the cake.
  3. Serve:
    • Serve the cake at room temperature or slightly chilled. Store any leftovers in the refrigerator.
