German potato pancakes Recipe

 

This is my grandfather’s favorite recipe. The house smells amazing every time I make it

German cuisine. These golden, crispy delights are made with grated potatoes and onions and mixed with a few

simple ingredients. They are an integral part of German food culture and are often enjoyed at festivals, Christmas

markets and family gatherings. They emerged in the 19th century as popular street food in Berlin and Cologne

and have been a popular part of Germany’s culinary heritage ever since.These versatile pancakes can be served in

a variety of ways. Traditionally, they are paired with applesauce or sour cream, offering a tangy complement to

their crunchy texture. For a savory twist, try them with smoked salmon or charcuterie. Complement the meal with

a fresh green salad or sauerkraut for a refreshing and flavorful side dish.

German potato pancakes Recipe

Ingredients:

1 pound peeled and grated potatoes

1 small onion, finely chopped

1 egg

3 tablespoons flour

Salt and pepper to taste

Vegetable oil for frying

Optional toppings: applesauce, sour cream, Smoked salmon or sauerkraut

Optional side dishes: green salad or sauerkraut

 

Instructions:

Grate potatoes and squeeze out excess moisture with a kitchen towel.Mix the grated potatoes with the chopped

onion.

In a separate bowl, mix egg, flour, salt and pepper until smooth.

Gradually mix the egg mixture into the potato-onion mixture.

Heat the oil in a pan over medium-high heat.

Add a spoonful of the potato mixture to the pan and flatten it into flat cakes.Fry for 3-4 minutes on each side

until golden brown and crispy. Drain on paper towels.

Serve hot with your favorite dressings and side dishes.

Note:

Keep cooked pancakes warm in a low oven if not serving immediately. Leftovers can be refrigerated and

reheated.
