A rich, creamy, old-school favorite made with salty dried beef and buttery white gravy, served over golden toast — perfect for breakfast or a cozy meal anytime.
Ingredients:
-
2 tablespoons butter
-
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
-
2 cups milk (whole milk preferred)

-
½ teaspoon black pepper
-
4 slices toasted bread (white or your choice)
Instructions:
-
Prepare the Cream Base
In a large skillet over medium heat, melt the butter.
Whisk in the flour to form a smooth roux. Cook for 1–2 minutes, stirring constantly, until lightly golden (this removes the raw flour taste). -
Make the Gravy
Gradually pour in the milk while whisking to avoid lumps. Continue cooking and whisking until the sauce thickens and becomes creamy (about 5–7 minutes). -
Add the Beef
Stir in the chopped dried beef and black pepper. Let the mixture simmer for 2–3 minutes to heat the beef and combine flavors.ADVERTISEMENT
-
Serve It Up
Spoon the hot creamed beef generously over slices of toasted bread. Serve immediately while hot and creamy.
Tips & Variations:
-
For added flavor, stir in a pinch of onion powder or nutmeg.
-
Make it heartier by adding cooked chopped eggs or sautéed mushrooms.
-
Substitute dried beef with chopped ham, bacon, or sausage gravy for a twist.
Storage:
Refrigerate leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 days. Reheat gently over low heat with a splash of milk to restore creaminess.
